Why Aluminum Window Frames Age So Fast — and What Homeowners Are Choosing Instead

There's a moment, usually about ten years in, when you start to notice it. The white frames on the bay window have gone a little chalky. The powder coating has bubbled up round the hinge. In a coastal house, it's worse — the salt air eats into the metal and the frames start to pit. And somewhere in there you do the maths on what replacing them is going to cost, and wish you'd spent a bit more the first time.

Nobody buys window frames for the thrill of it. They buy them once, and expect them to keep working for decades. So it's worth being clear about which materials actually do that.

The metal problem no one mentions at the showroom

Aluminum has a lot going for it — it's strong, it's cheap, and it can be extruded into those slim profiles architects love. The problem is that it's also a very good conductor of heat. In a cold climate, that means an aluminum frame is a thermal bridge: the warmth of the room leaks straight out through the metal, and the frame gets cold enough on the inside to condense. Condensation around the frame isn't just an aesthetic bugbear. Over time it soaks into the wall beside the window, and you get the damp patches, the mould, and eventually the paint and plaster going.

Slim is lovely. But it's a thin, metal tube sandwiched between the warm indoors and the cold outside, and physics doesn't care how beautiful the profile is.

The other one: vinyl, and the expansion problem

Vinyl (uPVC) was supposed to be the answer to all this. It doesn't conduct heat, it's cheap, and it doesn't corrode. But vinyl expands and contracts a lot as the temperature swings, and it's not very stiff. On a large window, that means the frame can sag, bow, or warp over time. The seals and the glazing do what they're told at first, then stop doing it as the frame flexes. What a fiberglass window frame actually brings

Here's the material that solves the problem from both ends. A pultruded fiberglass frame — the kind made by pulling continuous glass fibres through a resin bath and a heated die — is stiff enough to hold a large window in shape, weak as a conductor of heat, and it doesn't corrode. That combination is unusual. You get the slim, elegant sightlines that the aluminum fans like, without the thermal bridge; and you get the dimensional stability that the vinyl fans want, without the sag.

Fiberglass frames don't expand and contract the way plastic does. They don't pit in coastal air the way metal does. And because the material is inherently strong, you can push the sizes larger without the frame turning into a chunky, heavy affair. This is why a lot of the talk in the industry, especially along the coast or in hot-and-cold climates, has moved toward fiberglass (FRP) window frames.

For a homeowner, the practical upsides are the ones you actually notice: no condensation running down the frame on winter mornings, no chalky, faded surface after a few years of sun, no frames that have quietly gone out of square. And because there's no coating to peel and no metal to rot, the frames tend to look the same at year fifteen as they did at year two. That's a "beauty" argument as much as a durability one, and for a house you intend to keep, it matters.

The one question to ask before you commit

When you compare window frame materials, ask about the frame's thermal performance — the U-value of the whole frame, not just the glass. Aluminum with a thermal break will always be a compromise. It's better than raw aluminum, but it's still a metal bridge, and it's got more parts, more seals and more potential failure points than a frame that's a single, insulating material all the way through. A few things worth knowing before you start

If you're renovating an older house, the frame size and the wall opening matter more than you'd think — a new frame has to sit properly in the existing reveal, and the wrong one can destroy your insulation gains.
